She was still cowering behind the supply car, her back pressed up against a giant freezer that she intensely hoped wasn't used to hold bodies, though it probably was.
The room was silent but for the ticking of the clock, which meant that the strange little man had gone. She wondered if she had time to escape before he got back.
But where would she go? Better yet, where the hell was she?

"In danger?" she scoffed, rolling her eyes. "You're kidding," she said sarcastically. "I'm sorry," she added. "Its just that I'm a wizard. I'm normally in some kind of danger. I'm sure that I would know if something bad was about to happen to me." She studied him across the desk. "It seems like you've come here for me to help you, perhaps? That is, in fact, what I do. I'm a wizard. I'm here to help people. How can I help you?" She took another sip of the latte, watching him over the top of the foam cup. "Perhaps a proposition? Something that could be mutually beneficial?" Odd rolled his eyes at her. "Mutually beneficial?" he echoed in disbelief. "Are you asking me to.....? What exactly are you asking me to do? Protect you? I already offered to do that." He watched her across the desk and crossed his legs, fidgeting while he waited for her reply. "I'm not asking you for anything," she said simply. "Protection is the last thing that I would ask of you. I am simply saying that you think that something brought you here, and I wish to help you. I am prosing that something that will help us both be arranged. Surely you must have some idea of something that brought you here." She pulled out a legal pad and a pen, ready to write down whatever he might have to say that would be useful to know later. "Go ahead," she said. "Let's brainstorm."

OOC: This is going to apparently jump around a little, because I'm going to take this from here. Because I'm that cool. ---------------------------------- It was strange, really, that he hadn't heard from Harry lately. Surely there had to be some sort of crisis that needed their attention. Frankly, he'd been bored with this life lately, no matter how far from ordinary it all was. In a way, it was good that no one/thing had been trying to kill him lately, but it made for a rather mediocre existence. Even Lara had been oddly silent lately, seeming to have almost given up on brainwashing him to see things her way. Lara was a puzzle in her own right, really. She seemed like she really wanted him to do as she wished, but then she would just vanish, sometimes for weeks at a time, speaking to no one. He wondered vaguely if she was on the verge of some drastic personal revelation. But he very much doubted it. It was this boredom, really, that had lead to him walking around the streets of Chicago in the rain that morning. For some reason, his feet had carried him down past the morgue, and when he glanced up at the building, wondering why he was there, exactly, he was just in time to see Waldo Butters sneaking around the outside of the building, lab coat held up over his head as a makeshift umbrella. Catching the medical examiner's attention, he waved for him to come over. When the two had met, he frowned. "What the hell are you doing?" he asked. -------- ooc: Dear Butters. Don't mind me dragging you into this. Stormy will have to backtrack a little bit, but Butters can tell some of it in flashback. Sorry, I was bored. XD (Dear Thomas: It's fine. XD) Joining Thomas on the sidewalk, Butters straightened his clothes and wiped sweat from his brow. "I'm sneaking around," he said. "There is....a girl I've never seen before in the morgue. I don't know where she came from, who she is, or why she's here. I'm trying to figure that out." He frowned. "I'm sneaking up on her because when she saw me, she freaked." He blinked, suddenly feeling stupid. "Wait, what?" He blinked again, shaking his head. "You're telling me that some girl came out of nowhere, saw you in the lab and went completely postal? And now you're sneaking back in.....to do what exactly? How is scaring the living hell out of the girl supposed to accomplish anything?" He held up his hand to stop anything Butters might have said. "No, never mind. Don't answer that. It's probably some stupid logic that isn't going to make sense anyway." He sighed. "Let me help you. I'm good at sneaking."

When she was silent, he continued, "she died five years ago. The.....lines between the here and the there seem very...blurred almost. Like she's trying to contact me. What does that mean?"

"Well, it definitely means something!" She looked almost excited. "We've been on the verge of a breakthrough! The distance between here and the next world, life and death....ghosts, powers, entities..." She trailed off looking thoughtful. Tapping the pen on the paper, she stared at him for a long moment before trying to explain. "Look, the NeverNever is the world that exists beyond this one. It is a world of magic- both good and bad. Ghosts and demons. The walls have been thin lately, things have been coming through. And we don't know why. Something is disrupting the balance."

Thomas stared at Butters for a moment, blinking stupidly. "Wait. You're seriously asking me why I'm going to help you?" He shook his head. "This is stupid. It's because I'm on your side you idiot!" He barely resisted the urge to shake the other man. "Now look," he said. "Here is what we are going to do. We're going to split up. You go in the front, I'll go in the back. We'll meet outside the room where you say this girl is hiding. We'll get to the bottom of this." Without waiting for a res ponce, he started walking off. "Well? Let's go!"

"What the hell is the NeverNever? It sounds like something out of a stupid children's movie!" He frowned skeptically. "But you're saying that there is some kind of a disturbance, and that...people...things....are coming through?"

Butters frowned. "You're going to help me?" He shook his head as he tried to gather his thoughts. "Wait. Not to sound ungrateful, but....why?" (Not feeling creative tonight, but I have some free time and am up late.) Thomas stared at Butters for a moment, blinking stupidly. "Wait. You're seriously asking me why I'm going to help you?" Without waiting for a res ponce, he started walking off. "Well? Let's go!" "Right. Going through the back. Got it." Butters had to practically jog to keep up with Thomas's long-legged stride. "Good luck!" he added as he jogged around the back of the building. Standing outside the back door, he fumbled for his keys, wondering how long it would take Thomas to get through the front doors. "Dammit," he muttered to himself as he dropped the keys. He scrambled to pick them up and shoved the proper key into the lock. Technically speaking, he and Thomas would approach the room from opposite ends of the hall, meet in the middle and....something. He wasn't sure what they would do, but they would get to the bottom of this, dammit! Letting himself into the building, he began to creep through the silent halls. At times working in a morgue was just creepy. Thinking of it, this had to be the first time it had ever been inconvenient. He'd never had to be this quiet before. Finally, he'd reached the right hallway, and could see Thomas approaching from the opposite end. He raised his hand in a little wave to the other man and met him silently at the door. "On three?" he whispered, reaching for the doorknob. "One......two.....THREE!" He threw the door open and lunged inside. Edited because I'm a dumbass, and I didn't realize that my reply had somehow gotten buried in the quote. Thanks to Emily for catching that.

OOC: I'm not doing quotes yet b/c haven't been replied to directly yet, and I don't want to screw it up.
She screamed as the door slammed open. She couldn't help it. She hadn't meant to, and it was doubtlessly going to end badly, but she was startled, and cold and scared and lost.
She leaped up from behind the table and dove for the door, wondering if she would be able to evade them. The chances were slim, but it was worth a try. She faked left, went right, and tried to duck between them. She could almost taste the relative freedom of the hallway.
Unfortunately, and escape was not meant to be.

"What the fu-," he sputtered as the girl tried to rush between himself and the short M.E. "Not so fast!" Easily he grabbed her by the arm, bringing her to an abrupt halt and jerking her back into the room. "Butters, door," he muttered. He gave her a look that was almost stern, but not quite a glare. "Who are you?" he demanded. "And why are you here?" Not quite Harry's style of interrogation, but it was close. Speaking of Harry..... In a way, he hoped they wouldn't have to call him. Things seemed to get more complicated when Harry Dresden was involved.

"But you're saying that there is some kind of a disturbance, and that...people...things....are coming through?" "Well, in laymens terms, yes," she replied. "I mean, there's obviously a lot more magical theory to it, but I don't know if I know how to explain it. I'm not even sure if that's what's going on. I'm going to have to make a phone call first. There's someone I know in Chicago...he can tell me what he thinks." She flipped idly through her roladex, stalling for time. She wasn't looking forward to calling Harry Dresden of all people. Doubtlessly, he would have some sarcastic Dresden bullshit....or worse, there would be an actual problem. With a sigh, she dialed, and pressed the phone tightly to her ear. After a few rings, it went to an answering machine. She wasn't sure whether she should feel glad that he hadn't answered or worried that something was wrong. "Harry," she said into the phone, "its Elaine. I need you to call me back as soon as you get this. It's important." Slamming the phone back onto the desk with a sigh, she turned to Odd again. "Now," she said, "we wait." OOC: Not sure if I'm doing this how we originally did.

It was going to be one hell of an adventure, at least. She probably wouldn't be able to escape. And even if she could, where would she go? She didn't even know where she was. That thought lead to an onslaught of panic and she suddenly jerked her arm out of his grasp, screaming in terror. She flailed, taking a step back, breathing hard. Where was she? What was going on? What happened to Odd? The panic was overwhelming. She couldn't breath. She was going to die.... Her eyes rolled up in her head as she fained onto the cold cement floor.

"On second thought," he said, "I'll keep an eye on her. You call Harry."

Looking cautiously into the hall to see if anyone had heard the commotion, he eased the door shut. "Get her off the floor. Elevate her feet and make sure he collar isn't restricting her breathing! Put her up on the lab table, ok? I'll call Harry!" Leaving Thomas to do as he said, Butters hurried across the room, falling gracelessly into his desk chair. "Harry," he muttered. "Harry, Harry, Harry....." He hunted through the desk drawer, finding a tattered blue notebook. He flipped it open to a particular page, finger running down the column of names. "Harry!" He picked up the phone and dialed, letting it ring, praying for an answer. This was big.
