With a sigh, Odd Thomas pushed his dark glasses back up his sweaty nose. The heat was going to kill him. He looked apprehensively around the crowded street, then glanced from the paper in his hand to the building in front of him, certain that there was no way in hell he could be in the right place. The setting was entirely too normal for the person that he was looking for.
The paper in his hand had been torn out of a phone book, which he had found in one of the only phone booths in the city of Los Angeles. In flowing script, it read: Elaine Mallory. Wizard.
It all made little sense. He'd never heard of a woman being a wizard. And he'd never heard of a wizard who advertised, either. Adding that to the chaos and perfect normality of the street that the small, nondescript brownstone building stood on, he found himself to be incredibly confused.
Something had drawn him to Los Angeles, and when he'd found the phone booth, he'd picked up the phone book without a thought. He'd skimmed through the book and found the woman's ad before he'd even realized that he was looking at it. Something told him that he needed to speak to her, and soon, and that it was very important.
Lately, nothing had been making much sense, really. He'd been dreaming of Stormy a lot, though she'd been dead now for nearly five years. He wasn't sure if this Elaine woman had anything to do with what had happened, or what he was supposed to be gaining from associating with her. All he knew was that it felt right for him to be there.
With a sigh, he opened the door and stepped into the building. The air inside was blessedly cold; cold enough to make him shiver after his time outside. There was a small aquarium to his right, a reception desk to his left, and straight ahead of him, a closed door, leading further into the building.
"Can I help you, sir?" the receptionist asked, glancing at him like he was not at all what she'd expected to come waltzing through her door. Idly, he wondered if he should have made an appointment.
"Yes," he replied. "I am here to meet with....," he glanced down at the scrap of paper in his hand, "..Elaine Mallory. She isn't expecting me, but if she is in, would I be able to see her?"
The receptionist nods slowly. "Yes, sir. She's out to lunch at the moment, if you would like to take a seat?"
He nods back, and falls into one of the chairs near the aquarium and settles in to watch the fish until the wizard returns.

Elaine Mallory hummed to herself as she walked down the street, a cardboard drink holder containing three lattes in one hand, a white bag full of bagels swinging from her other hand. Opening the door to her office, she waltzes in, still humming, and sets the bagels down on her assistants desk. "Mary, if you could tell Lydia that there are bagels.....and I brought you the chai latte, like you said. Nonfat milk." She smiled at her, took one of the latte, and started to walk off before she noticed the strange man sitting by the aquarium.
She turned to him, smiling rather confusedly. "Good afternoon," she said hesitantly. "What brings you here today?"
"Oh!" Mary replies, slapping herself in the forehead. "This gentlemen came in a bit ago and requested to speak to you. You didn't have any other appointments scheduled, so I told him to wait."
"I.....see," she says slowly, studying him intently. "Well, if you'd like to step into my office, we can discuss." She walks through the closed door at the end of the hallway, and gestures for him to follow her. There is another door in front of them, one to the left and one to the right. They take the one to the right, into her office.
The office is rather large, painted a soft green. The desk sits in the middle of the room, in front of a large picture window looking out over downtown. She turns to him and extends her hand to him. "Hello. I'm Elaine Mallory, but I trust that you know this already, as you've sought me out for something." She falls into the chair behind her desk, gesturing for him to sit down. Taking a sip of the latte, she asks, "What brings you to my doorstep?"

It was strange, really, that he hadn't heard from Harry lately. Surely there had to be some sort of crisis that needed their attention. Frankly, he'd been bored with this life lately, no matter how far from ordinary it all was. In a way, it was good that no one/thing had been trying to kill him lately, but it made for a rather mediocre existence.
Even Lara had been oddly silent lately, seeming to have almost given up on brainwashing him to see things her way. Lara was a puzzle in her own right, really. She seemed like she really wanted him to do as she wished, but then she would just vanish, sometimes for weeks at a time, speaking to no one. He wondered vaguely if she was on the verge of some drastic personal revelation. But he very much doubted it.
It was this boredom, really, that had lead to him walking around the streets of Chicago in the rain that morning. For some reason, his feet had carried him down past the morgue, and when he glanced up at the building, wondering why he was there, exactly, he was just in time to see Waldo Butters sneaking around the outside of the building, lab coat held up over his head as a makeshift umbrella.
Catching the medical examiner's attention, he waved for him to come over. When the two had met, he frowned. "What the hell are you doing?" he asked.

ooc: Dear Butters. Don't mind me dragging you into this. Stormy will have to backtrack a little bit, but Butters can tell some of it in flashback. Sorry, I was bored. XD

"I really don't know why I'm here, actually." He shook his head. "I'm starting this all wrong. I'm Odd Thomas. It's a pleasure to meet you." He reached across the desk and shook her hand. Perching on the edge of the offered chair, he continued, "You see, I'm not entirely sure I know why I'm here. I have this.....intuition, of sorts. I felt like I should go into a phone booth, so I did. And I flipped through the phone book, and something drew me to your ad. I feel like I should be here, but I don't know why." He wondered briefly if he sounded like a lunatic, but she was a woman who seemed to believe in magic. She probably wouldn't think he was too crazy. "I'm from Pico Mundo. I've been....traveling. You probably understand, if you know what happened there five years ago. In any case, something brought me here. And I don't know why. I feel like I'm missing something important. I think I'm supposed to help you. Protect you. Something bad is going to happen. I have a feeling." He glanced around the room, a confused frown on his face, searching for the presence of bodachs, the otherwordly, shadowy creatures that seemed to always be lurking around those who were in grave danger. Something about her screamed that she was a magnet for danger, but there were no bodachs to be seen. For someone in mortal peril, she seemed remarkably calm, even cheerful. There was a sort of air of dangerousness about her as well, a darkness that he couldn't quite put his finger on. He'd never experienced something like it before, and he wondered if it was some new sort of intuition. He studied her in silence for another moment before saying, "I think you may be in danger." |

Stormy Llewellyn blinked as she opened her eyes and sat up slowly. The room was colder than all hell, and she was shaking, which hurt. Everything hurt. Her body was stiff, muscles cramped. She stretched her neck and arched her back, waving her arms, trying to bring mobility back. She felt, in short, like she had been hit by a truck.
Blinking slowly, she looked around the room and shrieked. She was in what appeared at first to be a science lab. Until one noticed the refrigerators in the back of the room. A morgue. And she was sitting on the exam table. But....why? Had she been dead? Was she dead now? She slid down from the table, slowly, as the feeling began to come back into her feet. What in the hell was going on?
Her shriek seemed to have attacked attention, as she heard footsteps in the hall. Muttering to herself, she ducked down behind a rolling supply cart to hide. Whoever was coming was probably not going to be really likely to listen to her story.....

Harry Dresden was sitting in his office, relaxing for once in his life. Sort of. He'd just wrapped up a rather messy case, and he was glad that nothing was trying to kill him. For the moment.
He glanced down at his desk calendar, looking bored. He had an appointment with Molly, later that day.
And it was unavoidable that he have a word with Thomas. Thomas.....well, that was an entire barrel full of monkeys that he wasn't so keen on opening.
It wasn't often that he got to relax, and he was shocked to find that he was going crazy with boredom. Something had to be going on somewhere.
(No lie, I don't even know what I'm doing. I kept getting yelled at to post, so I posted....something. I'm not even sure you could call this worthy of being Dresden. Epic fail.)
